Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters (OFAH) and the City of Peterborough collaborated to build a park on land along the banks of the Otonabee River. Located at 2034 McNamara Road, in May 2019 the park opened with a purpose to inform and educate the public as well as to provide a peaceful and relaxing green space.
Peterborough and Area Master Gardeners took up the challenge to create a pollinator garden using all native plants. Five Master Gardeners researched and collaborated to draw up a planting plan. The next step was to find out where we could buy these plants using local nurseries and Peterborough Green Up nursery.
Being at the entrance of the park, the goal was to insure that the garden would establish quickly and last for many years. The soil was extremely poor and needed amendments in order to flourish. The City provided compost, top soil and mulch and this was put in place in May 2019. Shortly afterwards, came the exciting part, planting! The official park opening happened on May 23rd with the mayor, council members, OFAH staff and Master Gardeners in attendance.
Since then labels have been made with the common and Latin names and are in place next to the plants. Peterborough and Area Master Gardeners maintain the garden by weeding, digging out over-enthusiastic plants. This is generally done in the spring, once in the summer and in the fall. There have been many positive remarks from the public when the Master Gardeners have been working in the garden. The park has also been used for some Master Gardener meetings.
OFAH runs school programs on conservation and wildlife and has educational notices in the park. There are notes on invasive plants, trees and fish and the Master Gardeners are delighted to see school children enjoying the park and pollinator garden.
